The ancient Indian game Chaturanga (meaning the four branches of the army, or possibly "four armies") was long thought to be the original form of chess. The logic of the assumption is clear: Here are four armies, each one with one piece of each sort, plus the array of pawns; they were later consolidated into two armies with two of each piece and eight pawns each.
But more recent investagation places the great Indian game of Chaturanga as an off-shoot of the two-player game. An ancient game with fascinating characteristics, indeed!
Accounts of this game are described in great detail in H.J.R. Murray's massive book A History of Chess (1913) -- see photo from book in the pictures below.
The game comes complete with rules, explaining the ancient moves of the pieces and how they were moved in accordance with special 4-sided dice. A great, authentic adventure into chess history, not to be missed by any fan of the world's best loved board game!
THIS SET IS AN OUTSTANDING RE-CREATION
This set is exceptionally well created, to please the senses every bit as much as it stimulates the mind. It is new, in its box. The game itself is stored in a sturdy wooden bookshelf case. Inside you will find 4 colored bags, one for each of the four armies, a printed scarf-like playing mat with the traditional markings, and a booklet of instructions. A welcome addition to any library or game room.
Note that the pieces are molded of a beautifully pigmented solid plastic, in the traditional forms of the army components of their day: The king, elephant, horse, ship and 4 individual pawns.
This is a rare contemporary re-creation, done in high style, of one of the most fascinating artifacts in chess history.
