McGoogan introduces us to the man who inspired Samuel Taylor Coleridge's epic Rime of the Ancient Mariner and reveals him to have been just as spellbinding a character as the fictional version. You will find no albatrosses here, nor vessels 'idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean'. Instead there is the gripping tale of Samuel Hearne who joined the navy at the age of 12, went to war, and became the first European to walk to the Arctic region of North America. It was a harrowing experience and almost caused his death, but as with everything else in his life Hearne refused to be deterred. He had convinced himself that there were untold copper riches beneath the ice and he wanted to find them. Hearne went on to witness the Coppermine River massacre and built a relationship of mutual respect with Indian leader Matonabbee. Here we have a great tale of adventure - and all of it true.
