ANTIQUE KING CHARLES SPANIEL INKWELL PEN HOLDER 19TH.C.

BLACK FOREST STYLE CARVED FIGURE

An antique carved wooden inkwell and pen holder in the form of a King Charles Spaniel with glass eyes. Carved with great detail and expression, the dog offers a place for an inkwell and also a place for holding a pen.

The 19th. Century form is carved in a Black Forest style. The inkwell was found in France and may date to the Napoleon III period. The King Charles Spaniel is usually associated with King Charles II of England. They are fondly referred to as Tudor lap blankets or comforter spaniels. Mary Queen of Scots is credited with introducing the breed to England and Scotland; however it is believed that she was first introduced to the breed while spending her youth in France. French or English……he was the ruling pet during the Renaissance period.

Measurements; 6 3/4" long X 4" high

Condition; Very good, please note some surface scratches to stain, small chip on one toe, collar is worn, hinge on the head opens and closes easily, no glass inkwell or pen.
