Hello, the request for an appraisal and opinion of auhenticity has been referred to me for a reply. I have closely examined the information you have submitted. Thank you for the descriptive information. My findings are based on this information. A bargueno is a desk first produced in the 15th century that continues to be produced today. It is a form of portable desk resembling the top half of a fall front desk. It is basically a chest or box with one of the side panels, rather than the top panel, serving as a "lid". The side panel folds down to become a horizontal writing and working surface. The interior of the desk is equipped with small drawers, pigeonholes etc., for storing papers and supplies. The bargueno has been also used for sewing or as a jewel chest, rather than just for reading or business activities. Barguenos first appeared in the 15th century and were popular all through the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. After a lull in the 19th century, they became popular again as antiques in the 20th century. The bargueno desk originated in Renaissance Spain. The desk was typically made of wood with sturdy iron handles located on each side, to make transporting it relatively easy. A bargueno could be set down on any solid table. As a general rule, the interior of a bargueno is much more richly decorated than the exterior. Thus a bargueno looking very plain from the exterior will have a reasonably rich and sculpted interior. while a bargueno with impressive exterior decoration will have a truly ornate and extremely rich interior.
| Authenticity: |
The expert appraiser is of the opinion that this item IS PROBABLY authentic. Reason: 1. The dovetaiing (5) indicate a construction of an 18th century desk. 2. The grain on the bottom of the drawers runs front to back with slight spaces (this can be remedied), the wood is well oxidized, this indicates an 18th century desk. 3. The inside of the bargueno has the interior decoration, but the exterior appears to be more ornate, this should be the reverse. 4. The hardware appears to be iron. 5. The sides do not have handles for transporting. 6. Without a physical examination of the desk, the wood cannot be authentically determined. 7. The marquetry is a Baroque style. 8. The design on the bargueno indicates a German element. I would date the bargueno C. 18th century (late 1700's). The value for the bargueno would be between $---- and $-----.The market comparison approach to value was used which estimates value by comparison with properties sold in the relevant market, with adjustments made for all differences that affect value, such as differences in characteristics of value, in market layer, and in time. The values listed below may vary depending on how and where it is marketed. A larger bargueno dating from the 17th century would be valued between $18,000.00 and $20,000.00. | |
