RARE ANTIQUE EARLY 19th c. SCHOENHUT HUMPTY DUMPTY CIRCUS WOODEN TOY ELEPHANT FEATURING THE OLDER VERSION WITH HANDPAINTED EYES

NO RESERVE

Recently purchased as part of a private estate sale from Kilburn, England.  This delicately carved antique wooden toy elephant is in vintage condition with age rubbed places on the wooden toy's body and missing its original leather elephant ears and rope tail.  Unsigned, but definitely an antique early Rare Hand Painted Eyes SCHOENHUT HUMPTY DUMPTY CIRCUS ELEPHANT.  English Estate purchased from dated this antique wooden Toy Elephant circa early 1900's.

Simplistic and elegant design with original wooden legs attached with vintage stringing.  The head still bobs up and down.  The original white wooden tusks are intact with handpainted eyes and red mouth.  The tips of the wooden tusks show a bit of wear.  He is missing the tip of his trunk which should extend a bit further and curl up at the end.  I couldn't decide on which pictures to edit for the description so I just had to list them all below in order to show the amazing quality and rarity of this vintage piece of Early 20th century German Toy Making.

SCHOENHUT HUMPTY DUMPTY ELEPHANT

The elephant is the animal most associated with the circus. Intelligent and strong, the elephant is both a performer and a workman, useful for pulling wagons and lifting tent poles.

Elephants used in the circus are uniformly female and Indian. The ears of the Indian elephant are much smaller than that of the African elephant thus leading to speculation that Schoenhut may have made a large-eared style for its Teddy Roosevelt sets.  African elephants have been used rarely in circuses as they are not as trainable as the Indian. Males are not desirable since they pay too much attention to the females and not to their trainer.

The elephant is the largest animal in the menagerie. Circuses usually had many elephants, using many in the grand entry (see painting). The Howdah blanket is a typical adornment for the elephant.

Revisions in Description - thank you Laurel

Schoenhut was not a German company, but American company that was founded by a German immigrant who wanted to prove a high quality toy piano could be made here. He later added dolls and the circus and other toys to the products the company made.

This elephant is not an earlier style, because the early ones had glass eyes. The later ones had intaglio ( decal) eyes. This elephant's eyes have rubbed off and been repainted.

Schoenhut did not make a long eared version of the elephant for their Teddy Roosevelt in Africa set. The elephant that came with it was the same as the circus one but it came with a different style blanket. This elephant came with the circus and is the most common of all the animals they sold.

He can be restored, though it will take some work. His ears were leather and his tail was the cording they used to use on window sashes, and his trunk end was rubber. I think yours is missing the wood part right before the rubber, also. If someone takes a good look at a photo ( easy to find online) they could fashion something fairly easily. If his head bobbles, as you stated, it means his elastic has given out. You can use  several strands of cord elastic or buy the heavier sort at some camping supply places. There are also people who repair them, too.
