AFRICAN AMERICAN quilts are so often FABULOUS ABSTRACT pieces, created to be functional, but in the creating they turned into a WORK OF ART! Using scraps from feedsacks, old clothes, whatever she had on hand, the maker started with no plan, but using her God-given artistic talent and a sense of the beautiful in her soul, she gradually added pieces until they formed what we now call a masterpiece.
As this artist worked, she remembered her traditions, using a dominance of strips and a variety of sizes, throwing in bright and contrasting colors, working in offset designs to confuse any evil spirits that might be lurking.
