According to Jeffrey Snyder "ROMANTIC STAFFORDSHIRE CERAMICS" the J. W. Pankhurst Co. produced earthenware ceramics from 1850-1882 at Charles and Old Hall Street, Staffordshire, and Godden comments "formerly W. Ridgway." J. W. Pankhurst, as many other companies including Mayer, produced Romantic scenic transferware popular and often exported, in the mid 19th century.
This large and magnificent 9" 1/8" plate is the heavy ironstone weight ceramic, and very sturdy.
Lucerne called Luzern in German and Lucerna in Italian Lucerna is a city in Switzerland that was founded around 896-1300. With Medieval structures, Lake Lucerne and other points of interest, the area has been captured here for transfer plating art as shown.
Mid 19th century transfer wares depicted exotic, Far and Near East scenes, or English countryside pastoral landscapes with great detail.
Lucerne is a delightful pattern combining several patterns, a ground that resembles netting, leaves and vines, scroll accented cartouches around the 10 sided cavetto rim, with scenic architectural buildings that compliment the center scene.
This is just a wonderful example of blue transferware, and is simply gorgeous!
English ceramic makers from Staffordshire produced thousands of pieces in many hundreds of patterns, including Romantic, Scenic and Historical for export.
There is a glaze pop and a transfer skip on top, the surface is smooth and glossy and there is
NO DAMAGE THAT I CAN SEE OR FEEL!
