ANTIQUE CHINESE BOWL WITH DRAGON & BAT ORNAMENTATION
|
From the estate of former member of American diplomatic corps in post war Japan A very old piece of Chinese porcelain. This beautiful bowl has a yellow background with a finely incised and painted vine and floral motif. There are two large pink orchid-like flowers with green highlights and numerous small pink buds along with intermittently placed small blue flowers and leaves. The top of the bowl features a reddish-brown bat with its wings extended and its head extending over the rim of the bowl. The bat seems to be staring at the serpent-like bodied dragon whose head with its long slender tongue also extends over the opening of the bowl. At some point in its long life damage occurred to one of the raised legs of the dragon and to one of the flowing fin-shaped appendage behind the ear of the dragon. Previous owner has cleverly disguised the damage by perfectly matching the deep blue color(see photos). Damage is not at all noticeable unless dragon is given close inspection. The paint trails on inside of bowl are from original coloration, not the repainting. There is also a very shallow 1/16" nick on the rim. The bowl stands 3 1/2" tall (4" to top of dragon's leg) and is 5 1/2" in diameter. The only mark on bottom of bowl is "CHINA" in same color as the bat.
