The kris in Javanese & Balinese culture, as well as being a protective weapon & an amulet, has always had mystical & cosmic association, both from the way the metal is forged & from the smith who creates it. A suitable day for starting the work has to be chosen from an astrological calendar, & often the smith would go into a retreat to cleanse his spirit, so that during the ritual of forging the kris, the heavenly & earthly spheres became connected. This kris has the traditional handle from Jogjakarta is from the early 20thc although the blade is probably older. The sheath is in a brass floral engraving with two small dents. I bought this in the mid 80s in Jogjakarta. It measures 19" in the sheath & the blade is 15" long.
