VERY BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE LADIES COMPACT. MARKED 800 WITH A SWAN SIGNATURE. EUROPEAN MADE, COUNTRY UNKNOWN. THE TOP IS EXQUISITE WITH APOLLO AND HIS CHARIOT & HORSES HAND PAINTED IN PORCELAIN WITH MALACHITE COLORED ENAMELING AROUND THE PORCELAIN. ART NOUVEAU FLORAL PATTERN ON THE BACKSIDE. IT'S VERY LARGE AND FILLS UP MY WHOLE HAND MEASURING 4 1/4 INCHES LONG BY 3 INCHES HIGH BY 1/2 INCH DEEP. IT HAS NEVER BEEN USED. THERE IS NO POWDER ON THE INSIDE. IT HAS A BEVELED EDGE MIRROR WITH NO CRACKS OR CHIPS BUT A FEW TINY DARK SPOTS FROM AGING. IT'S VERY HEAVY WEIGHING 140.5 GRAMS. TRULY A PIECE OF ART YOU CAN HOLD IN YOUR HAND. IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. WITH THE MARKINGS 800 ON THE INSIDE OF THE TOP. THERE IS A SWAN MARKING AND AN INDISTINGUISHABLE MARKING NEXT TO THE 800 MARK. The Swan mark appears to be a French mark used on watch cases and other small boxes, 1893-1969. The shape of the swan (curvature of the neck), can vary slightly. This mark was used on foreign silver imports and other products that were of unknown foreign origin and provided the casing for French products. The silver fineness also varied. It could be Armenian, most likely originating from Persia or Turkey, but such works also came from Eastern Europe and were even made in France in the early 1900's, which carry the French mark.
