| Item #: | Y-22-0 | | Title: | 1830 English Grandfather Clock | | Dimensions (inches): | 93H x 22W x 9.50D | | Comment: | Here is a fine tall clock of lovely proportions made with a combination of woods, mainly pollard oak and mahogany, and featuring rosewood banding. The bonnet, with two smooth round columns flanking either side of the glazed bonnet door, is topped with a swan’s neck pediment, the original brass roundels, and three replacement brass ball and spire finials. The dial is in original found condition featuring, in the still arch, a painting of a maiden sitting against a tree with a basket of freshly picked flowers in her lap. In the spandrels (four corners) of the dial are paintings of flowers. Inside the chapter ring is a seconds dial, a calendar dial, and the faded signature of the maker. Reeded, square quarter columns anchor either side of the rectangular case door. The case sets upon a square plinth set upon bracket feet. This is an eight-day clock striking the hour on a cast bell. | | Subject Keywords: | Lady with Flowers Shells Birds | | Condition: | VERY GOOD In overall very good condition. Antique and vintage items by their very nature are used items and will show signs of normal wear due to age and use. As we define 'very good condition' relative to the stated age of the piece, we would expect to see 'character marks' consistent with that age and could include minor nicks or dings on a piece of furniture, normal separation at joints in wood due to expansion and contraction over time, all locks functioning, and all drawers and doors open or slide easily. If there has been a break in the marble, it has been so expertly repaired that it is difficult to tell. If some of the original trim has been replaced or minor restoration has been performed, it has been so expertly done that it is difficult to tell. Upholstered items may show wear consistent with age and use. EuroLux Antiques makes no representation regarding the comfort or useability for the customer's particular application. ITEM SPECIFICS Shows normal wear to finish and miscellaneous nicks, dings, and scratches due to age and use. There is wood separation on the left side at the joint of the top box, a split, a hole, and wood worm holes in the pine back, damage to the bonnet at the top left, and wood separation on the front door and the bonnet at the top right. The painted face is very worn. The spindles at the top have been replaced. Face has been completely restored since these photos were taken. Face now reads: 'Pilling of New Church' | | Clock Condition: | Clock is in running condition. Strike (Hour) Function: Strike in working order. Clocks of this style are commonly around 6 – 8 feet tall (the shorter Grandmother clock is usually between 5 – 6 feet tall). Most longcase clocks are striking clocks, which means they sound the time on each hour or fraction of an hour.
The advent of the longcase clock was due to the invention of the anchor escapement mechanism around 1670, which allowed a long pendulum that only needed to swing 4 – 6 degrees to operate, and was much more accurate than the older verge escapement. Until the 1800s, clocks were hand-made by individual craftsmen and were very expenisve. The rich ornamentation of clocks of this period indicates their value as status symbols of the wealthy. Pendulum clocks remained the world standard for accurate timekeeping for 270 years until the invention of the quartz clock in 1927. | | PieceType: | Clocks/Barometers | | Free Shipping: | This item will be shipped within the Contiguous 48 United States via a Ground shipping service (UPS or FedEx), approximate 1-6 business day shipping time. On occasion, a piece listed on a website may no longer be available. We do our best to maintain the accuracy of our inventory records but we often have customers interested in the same item at the same time. In those cases, we defer to the customer who placed the earlier order. We apologize in advance by any inconvenience this may cause. Because of this, we encourage all of our buyers to purchase the item as quickly as possible so that your treasured find doesn't sell elsewhere to someone else. Happy browsing and thanks! Aimee & Greg Talbot at EuroLuxAntiques. Please note that EuroLux Antiques goes to great lengths to include information about the functioning of any clock we list under the 'Condition' section of our listings. This information, to the best of our knowledge, is accurate at the time of the listing. For clocks that are listed as being in FULL working order (i.e., clock runs, clock strikes (if applicable), clock chimes (if applicable)), we typically test them again for 24-48 hours prior to shipping to confirm the accuracy of those statements. The customer will be contacted prior to shipping if a clock is found not to be fully functional, if so stated in the listing, as defined above. EuroLux Antiques provides a detailed leaflet about the functioning and care of vintage clocks with each clock that is shipped, whether the clock is fully functional or not. On occasion, stress during shipping and changes in the clock's environment can cause the clock to require a 'break in' period once the clock arrives at its destination. EuroLux Antiques and EuroLux Imports, Inc. warrants that the clock is in the mechanical condition as stated in the listing at the time that the clock is shipped from our facility. We are happy to assist the customer getting a clock to resume functioning, as represented in the listing. EuroLux Antiques and EuroLux Imports, Inc. provide no other warranties, express or implied, concerning the accuracy of time kept by the clock. Additionally, due to the nature of vintage clocks and our inability to control the clock's placement or treatment in the customer's home we cannot warrant the the future functionality of the clock after delivery and set-up in the customer's home. Any claim will be handled in strict compliance with EuroLux Antiques' Return Policy. | |

Terms & Conditions | By bidding, all Buyers bidding or purchasing any of EuroLux Antiques listings acknowledge that they have completely read and agree to all terms and conditions stated in EuroLux Antiques' Complete Terms and Conditions. EuroLux Antiques has painstakingly developed these policies and procedures to protect the Buyer and EuroLux Antiques, and not reading these policies will not be accepted as an excuse for the Buyer’s dissatisfaction. A Note About Shipping EuroLux Antiques takes a great deal of pride in its packing and shipping. Please keep in mind that packing fragile and irreplaceable vintage and antique items is not a quick or cheap endeavor. Proper packaging is expensive and bulky and takes a great deal of time to do the job correctly. Boxes are often far larger than most customers (or ebay) would imagine when packed properly. Occasionally, ebay's shipping calculator over-estimates shipping charges. We make a concerted effort to refund grossly excessive shipping charges whenever possible. When a customer selects UPS Ground, we sometimes ship with an equivalent service such as FedEx or DHL. The shipping charges are similar, and we have found these companies also offer our customers superior customer service. We also occasionally upgrade shipping from USPS Parcel Post to Priority or UPS/FedEx/DHL Ground. We are a small, family-owned business and our aim is to get your purchase to you as quickly as possible as safely as possible. Delays occasionally can occur due to not having the correct packaging material on hand or missing our regularly scheduled packaging pickup or drop off. We ask your consideration in matters such as these, and we try to communicate with you when delays push delivery out longer than our customers should normally anticipate. We value your inquiries should you have any questions or concerns at any time during our shipping process. Please, Do Not Contact EuroLux for Appraisals, Information About or Sale of Your Personal Items EuroLux Antiques receives many phone calls and emails each day from people requesting additional information, appraisals, or assistance selling their items. We are very happy to discuss any of our items with prospective buyers, but due to time constraints, we cannot respond to requests from non-customers. If your item is of a similar nature to one you see in our listings, please take that as a guide to your item's potential value and please feel free to use any information from our listings to help you identify your item. We do not buy from individuals, and if you wish to sell your items, we might suggest listing them on an online sales site. We do, however, welcome additional information or corrections regarding any of our listings by collectors of these items. Thank you for your understanding. Thanks!
