ANTIQUE GRAND TOUR MICRO MOSAIC PLAQUE, 5 VIEWS OF ROME

Just under 6 weeks now and I'm off to Rome. Those of you who follow us know what a tourist I truly am at heart, and that my favorite thing is to be in some history and culture rich city/country, soaking up both and hunting for the very finest antique items to be found. And of course when I get to Rome, I'll look for something as fine as this and perhaps find one, but I also know it will be 4-5 times our price and in fact, probably came from our shop. Yes, it's true, the dealers in Italy buy from us. Why not supercede, buy from us and pretend you bought it in Rome, use the savings to pay for your own trip. So, that said, allow me to show off this truly splendid early to mid-1800s Grand Tour souvenir micromosaic plaque some lucky (and wealthy) Victorian traveler would have bought and taken home as their souvenir of Rome, a nearly pristine desktop paperweight with pen tray sides, set with 5 superb views of Rome. You know, I know exactly where that one scene is and for the life of me can't think of the name of the building so I might have noted it wrong here. I can picture it; can walk the entire area into which it fits in Rome, can't bring up a name in my head. . . alas, I MUST go back and will! So, the micromosaics here are each in fine order, very fine work that is likely from the Vatican workshops.
Very good to excellent condition. Perfectly smooth to the touch, there are no missing or raised or broken tesserae among those bits of colored glass. A superb item, throughout. The single tiny flaw is noted - on tiny tiny nip on a corner. You'll probably overlook it if you find this one later in one of the shops in Rome, but we want to point it out here. Don't miss this one.
You know, we recently did a feature album on Grand Tour items, published to our Facebook site, still there. Follow us and sign on as a 'fan' and watch as we present a fabulous online array of elegant old things. Google us: Antiques & Uncommon Treasure on Facebook and join us!
