ANTIQUE GRAND TOUR MICRO MOSAIC PLAQUE, ROME COLISEUM

I can think of nothing that captures the essence and history of Rome any more than the Coliseum. For those of you who have yet to travel to Rome, you'll find it a most magical place, though likely smaller than you'd imagined, which is how I experienced it for the first time - and perhaps how the early 1800s Grand Tour visitor to Rome might have also experienced it. One such traveler, hoping to take home fine souvenirs of their journey and experience, would have found this superb micromosaic of the ruins the perfect thing. So, for your own souvenir, why not let history evoke history - a Grand Tour micromosaic of finest quality and condition (a tiny chip on outer rim of slate hardly detracts in one this old, after all). Sure, you might also have your photo taken with the 3 quirky guys standing outside in Ceasar's guard uniforms (admit it, we all do that!), but THIS is going to be the souvenir you will forever treasure. And if you wait to find it in Rome, say in the shops that flank the Piazza Navonne, you'll find it 3 to 4 times our price. I know - they all buy ours and raise the prices and sell to tourists. Buy here, smile there! And have a wonderful time in Rome!
Very good to excellent condition, small perfect and smoothly polished glass tesserae are all in place, no flaws to note. The only small imperfection is a 1/8" nip to the outer rim of the slate basin, at about the 7 o'clock position. A similarly tiny one on the rim of the back of slate, neither bothersome in something this old. Beautifully done, a colorful and superb depiction. Be sure to see our 5-scene plaque of Venice, too - sold separately. You KNOW you'll have to go to Venice if you're going to Rome. Don't miss Florence in between, and tell you what - Sienna beats Pisa by miles.
