We’ve all heard people say something like “I’ve let the dirty dishes pile up;” or “I’m just covered up with emails to answer;” or “I’d love to go with you, but I’m buried in work right now. Well that’s what has happened to me as far as antique kitchen spice cabinets are concerned.

They’ve just sorta backed up on me. I don’t exactly know how it happened. I feel a little like ole lady Scantland from down toward Newberry, Indiana. (You probably didn’t know her. She died about forty-five years ago, and she lived out in the middle of nowhere, all by her lonesome – except for her cats.)

I was out at her place one day picking up a hog. She helped me corner him using an old gate kinda like a big shield. Once we had him cornered we could run him along the fence ‘til we got to the place I’d backed my grandpa’s old truck up to an opening. He ran right up in the truck . . . followed by three cats who seemed to come out of nowhere.

I’ll sell these spice cabinets one or two at a time. Let’s start with the one shown above.

I jumped back when those cats darted into the truck behind that hog. That’s not the kind of thing you see every day. But before I could even comment, old lady Scantland picked up a big stick and had them shoo-ed out of the truck. “Blasted cats!” she said.

“Where’d those come from?” I asked.

“Oh,” she said. “They’re everwhere. They must be twenty in the house?

“No crap? Can I have a look?”

“Young man,” she snarled, “I should wash your mouth out with soap. You watch your language.” With that, we both headed for the house.

Here at 341, I have two "Prime Directives:"
First: I never, under any circumstances, use a reserve, and everything starts at $9, sometimes even less. And, I never end auctions early or use BIN.
Second: I don't clean, repair, or otherwise monkey around with anything. I push enough dust aside to note any flaws, but if I discovered it in some dusty attic, you can look forward to a little dust on it when it gets to your house. If it has a flaw or a wart, I'll tell you about it.
So rest easy and have some fun. Why not place a little tiny bid right now so's you don't forget about it later.

I had to chuckle a little to myself as we walked toward her old rundown house. She had hollered at me for using a relatively mild “naughty” word, yet I knew a little about her earlier days, and she was no deaconess, if you know what I mean.

My dad told me that when he was a kid, old lady Scantland was quite a looker when she was young. He also told me she turned that attribute into a vocation – sorta “worked from home,” if you get my drift.

Most every strappin’ young farm boy in the county either knew or “knew of” old lady Scantland. Of course, they didn’t call her “old lady” Scantland back then. They just knew that, for three bucks, a feller could have a quick date. Nothing has changed in that regard since mankind learned to grunt. It never will. There are a few folks out there who should just get over it!

Uh-oh. You know what I did? I went and forgot about that spice cabinet.

It stands 17” tall and is 5” deep. The case part has old creamy paint with a hint of yellow. It’s pine. You can still clearly see the stenciled “spice names” above the little inset knob on each drawer. Let’s see . . . Anything else I should tell you about it? I guess not.

GOOD LUCK. Oh wait! I’ll list another of those spice cabinets right now so I can tell you about the inside of old lady Scantland’s house.
