GRANDMOTHER'S BUTTON BOX
Let's rummage in the attic,
Bring everything into the light; Perhaps we'll find rare treasures
Hiding just out of sight. Here's hoping we find a few butto'ns
Inlaid with silver and gold Maybe some bright copper lustre,
Paperweights lovely and old. Oh Look! I have found some old buttons,
In the till of the old oaken chest. Just where Grandmama placed them
Long before she went to her rest. Here're a few in crumpled tissue,
Tied with ribbons of blue; They were on the gown worn at her wedding
When that wonderful gown was new. There are jewels a queen might envy,
Rare gems of every hue; Emerald, topaz and ruby,
And some of azure blue. Down in the darkest corner
Bound with a dull silver string, Is a box of faded satin
With only three buttons .within. One pictures a youth young and sturdy,
In a uniform of blue; The second, a maid fair and lovely,
With tresses of raven hue. The third, a tarnished brass button,
On it's face an eagle and shield Grandma's most cherished possession,
Grandpa died on Gettysburg field. Here are "calicoes" so dainty.
Stencils of blue, white and red. They remind me of an old time garden,
With it's glowing pansy bed. We will push the chest back in it's corner,
It's contents were grist for our mill; We are proud of our button collection,
That came from the old oaken till.
