Antique Bowl Back Mandolin
I don't know anything about what to look for in musical instruments, so I will just try and describe the item to the best of my ability and include evaluation info from my local music store.
From Music Store: I just had the instrument RE-STRUNG and TUNED on 5/2/08. I can include any information neccesary to show this. Store rep. stated that item is in perfect playing condition, small chip and wear does not effect sound.
What I See: (Instrument) I don't see any markings or labels. Looking inside, there is a cloth/mesh like material - looks like its used to secure multi color ribs on the bowl. There are three Opalescent/Mother of Pearl circles on neck. There is a small hairline crack in neck starting at the opening of the item spanning about 2" (seen in pic 3) There is a small chip at the opening, Face bows in due to wear. There is a beautiful detail of dark and light wood all around the face and the opening. In a very small area on the side, this light/dark wood detail has started to seperate. (shown in pics) Overall instrument has small light scratches from age/wear. The back is ribbed with light and dark wood, I assume its Mahogany or rosewood due to the deep rich color. On each side of the Mahogany bands there is a deep orange pinstripe. All of the ribs are in great condition and none are seperated in any way. There are 8 (Plastic ??) tuner keys each with its own metal gear-like mechanism. Instrument Measures 23.75" tall x 7.75" wide, Bowl is appx 5.5" deep. I have been told this shape is referred to as a "bowl-back" or "tater-bug". Pick gaurd area does not have any cracks. Due to the item being restrung, no strings are missing. There is a silver-toned shell shaped item at the bottom holding the strings.
(CASE Included) Case keeps off dust but does not offer much protection, and does not close securly. Can be repaired. Case has handle, possibly leather. Definately shows age wear. One strap on neck is broke, as is the strap that goes around the neck.
(Packing) I am a Bubble Wrap Queen - I wrap and wrap, better safe than sorry. In this case the item will be wrapped, then placed in case... and yes.. wrapped again before it goes into the box with styrofoam peanuts.
