ANTIQUE NAPOLEON III TANTALUS, 4 CROWN ENGRAVE DECANTER
Absolutely gorgeous & rare antique French Napoleon III era 10" Boulle style ebony & brass decanter box, tantalus or cellarette with all four original decanters, engraved crown topped monograms! Not only is this one of the most elegant old decanter boxes that we've managed to find but the bottles themselves are a very rare treat! Jet black ebony or ebonized walnut veneers, ornate reticulated & engraved brass Boulle style cartouche & escutcheon, brass band inlays and thick curved brass or bronze edging with engraved decoration! Beautiful!! The inside is in finished rosewood veneers, a fitting in the base holds the four original, likely Baccarat, gilded glass decanters! The decanters are in old blown glass, numbered necks and stoppers with gold enamel accenting and a beautiful, large wheel etched or engraved monogram with a royal crown! A truly exquisite old box, a one in a million so don't miss it!
Very good condition. No missing or replaced brass inlays, no veneer loss though there are a few tiny nips and some cracking or crazing to the top. The front lip of the lid portion is about 1/16" from being flush with the lower half of the box (a slight overhang there just above the escutcheon where the lid meets the base). Some wear to the gold enamel on the decanters, only one with a few nips to the rim (shown in the images). Working lock & key. See pictures for measurements.
