ANTIQUE REGENCY PERFUME CASKET, 6 GILT BACCARAT BOTTLES
Elegant & rare early to mid 1800s Regency style mahogany perfume casket or scent caddy with gilt ormolu ring handles, spiral marquetry edging and SIX original Baccarat or St. Louis gold enamel & cut crystal scent decanters! I'm pretty sure this is only the second, if that, perfume casket that was either large enough to accommodate six bottles OR had all six original pieces inside! The exterior is rather simple, in the Regency style popular in the early 1800s, but the spiral style marquetry borders do add a certain flare! Original gild ormolu side handles, also simple, also elegant. The interior is all original with the old velvet covered wood partitions, velvet lid lining and six thick glass or crystal bottles beautifully ornamented in gold enamel! Yes, a few of them have upper rim chips but the fact that they're all there and with the original facet cut stoppers is really unheard of. We're actually selling this one below our cost. Purchased out of Europe and shipped with the stoppers in the bottles.....hence the damage. A beautiful OLD piece nonetheless and one for the collector for sure!
Good-very good condition. The box itself is in fine shape, no missing inlays and no chips or damage to the mahogany veneers. There does appear to be a restored clearcoat and a small visible split toward the rear of the lid but that's it. As noted, a few of the bottles have chips. Two rather bad with half of the upper flared rims gone, two or three others with just small to tiny edge nips and two hairlines in the neck. Some wear to the gold enamel, mostly confined to the stoppers. See pictures for all measurements.
