THIS TURN OF THE CENTURY CARRIAGE BLANKET WAS MADE BY THE "STROOK" COMPANY IN NEW YORK CITY. IT IS PROBABLY LATE 1800'S. I PURCHASED IT IN UPSTATE NEW YORK IN THE 1980'S. READ THE "STROOK" STORY BELOW.
S. Stroock & Co was founded by Samuel Stroock who left his home in Tennessee in 1866 and trekked to New York to begin a small business in a loft, producing felt and carriage robes, or lap blankets, for the horse-drawn carriage trade. He eschewed the poor standards and practices of the times when "caveat emptor" was the by-word, and insisted upon offering only the highest quality; a novel approach that quickly led to "Stroock Carriage Robes" being synonymous with the best.
THIS CARRIAGE BLANKET IS IN GREAT CONDITION. IT IS MADE OF HORSE HAIR AND MEASURES 46 BY 63 INCHES. IT HAS A SMALL 1/4 BY 1/4 BARE SPOT ON THE FRONT. THE REVERSE SIDE, WHICH IS A DIFFERENT MATERIAL AND A DARK COLOR, HAS A FEW AREAS OF BROKEN STITCHES, THE LARGEST BEING ABOUT 1 INCH WITH HINTS OF ATTEMPTED REPAIR LONG AGO!
THE COLORS ARE BEAUTIFUL AND REMAIN VERY VIBRANT TO THIS DAY. THE DESIGN IN THIS BLANKET HAS HOLLY LEAVES AROUND THE BORDER WITH RED RIBBONS WHICH MIGHT LEAD ONE TO BELIEVE THIS WAS MANUFACTURED AS A CHRISTMAS SEASON PRODUCTION BY STROOK. THE "STROOK" LABEL IS ATTACHED TO ONE CORNER ON THE REVERSE SIDE. THIS BLANKET PREDATES THOSE FINER BLANKETS MADE OF CAMEL HAIR AND ALSO LLAMA BEGINNING IN 1919.
