This is a listing for a very nice old magnetic instrument. Designed to be used as a metal detector before the electronic units were available, it is also a very accurate and usable compass.
Made to be used by surveyors as an aid in locating the metal pins and pipes used to mark property lines and corners. Also used to find metal pipes buried shallowly under the earth before digging for them.
Made by Aqua Survey Instruments of Cincinnati, Ohio, this one has been kept in excellent working condition. Cosmetics are excellent and mechanically near perfect.
It is enclosed in a brown top grain leather case and a shoulder strap, also used to swing the instrument close to the ground for metal detection. The case of the instrument, itself, is made of a type of black plastic and is in excellent condition for it's age. The two crystals are clear and unscratched. The mirror is bright and untarnished. The needle works freely. There is some slight rusting on the chrome bezels and rub marks on the case from the backs of the snaps holding the strap and the two that holds the case cover closed. These could be polished out as they are shallow marks.
There is a chrome handle that swings up and can be used to carry the compass out of the case while searching for pins, or just to locate points of the compass. The instrument, while in the case, sits on a leather strap which is used to lift it out of the case,
The inside of the leather case lid has a large arrow with the word NORTH printed in it. When operating the instrument as a metal detector, the case is held close to the ground, pointing toward the North, and swung from side to side. The needle is not visible from the top when pointed North until the instrument detects metal below it. Then the needle swings into view.
To use it as a compass, position the box on it's side with the side window up. Then, the needle, which has one end red and the other black, will function as a regular compass.
This, as is other items I sell from time to time, are items left to me by others in our family. Now at age 79 I am beginning to dispose of them. This one is a real collectors item and usable, if need be.
