COOL POSTER STEPPENWOLF SANTANA FILLMORE AUGUST 27 1968 |
|
when Steppenwolf headlined the bill at the new Fillmore in San Fransisco; other acts, Santana and The Staples Singers.
Up for bid, an original rock art concert print, taken directly from the ORIGINAL work which honors a particular point in time, hand numbered and signed BY THE ACTUAL ARTIST. This poster transports the viewer back to August, 27 1968
The poster would be considered a professional work nowadays; back then, just an announcement made by college art students. The artwork of the era unmistakable; a tribute to the genius of 60’s and 70’s graphic designers. This and other posters I offer, comprise a collection of what was known as “kiosk art”, designed to be placed around college and high school campuses at designated gathering points. One of the reasons so few of these exist today is because students would steal them off the kiosk just as soon as they went up! Each one measures 11” by 17”, this being the standard size for kiosk art. A few will vary in size and this will be noted in the auction. Note, kiosk art differs from handbills and fliers insomuch as the time dedicated to the creation of this kind of art was counted in days rather than hours. Far more attention was paid to “eye-grabbing” and “dazzling”. They had no idea that one day the art might be collectible, but these art students did believe – and justifiably so – that great art meant recognition. Many an artist began this way, and later went on the bigger and better things; foremost, the finest artist of this era, Peter Max.
For your consideration, a poster from The Brainstorrn Groups, SERIES FOUR. Brainstorm is a group comprised of retired, semi retired, aging rock artists, as well as some young blood, who have made their way and name in this world designing rock art. This includes posters, CD and album covers, sleeves, newspaper advertisements, postcards and the likes; all related to the wonderous world of Rock N Roll!
The performers, date, time and venue of the concert immortalized in this work are as follows: Steppenwolf headlined - as well they should - slong with Sanyana and the Staple Singers. The date and time, Tuesday, August 27th, 1968 at The Fillmore (West). this concert took place JUST after Bill Graham had relocated The Fillmore. location from Fillmore Street and Geary, to Market and Van Ness. Of interesting note, the concert took place at the same time as the second day of the Democratic Convention in Chicago; BIG TIME PROTESTS over there, but Cal was relatively quiet:)
This gig so impressed the artist that eventually, with this renewed interest in our musical past, he or she paid the event homage as best any artist can, producing a limited set of the original work for the public, With you as the owner, I doubt it will be stolen from a kiosk. Have no doubt, these concerts were REAL, they ACTUALLY OCCURRED, and chances are many of you attended one or another. Please don’t confuse these with other posters on eBay, made of cardboard, lacking any artistic value, offering “reproduction” posters of fantasy concerts, with fantasy line-ups, most of which never happened. For the record, and not to be redundant, it is important to know that EVERY poster is a hand signed, hand numbered, limited edition prints, taken from the original artwork, each print supervised by the actual artist who did the actual original work. Let me also add that my husband’s connections, and his calling in a few old debts, procured us the posters. It therefore is unlikely you’ll find any sold elsewhere on eBay unless they are used. You might on the web, or if you have friends in the biz, but not eBay! The artists of Brainstorm are not in it for the PayPal pennies, just the recognition, and hopefully a new gig doing what they love best, designing rock art; these kind of posters have, for over a decade, served as their “business cards”.
