This is one of a variety of masks and figures made by Ashanti metal smiths at Kumasi Ghana. Formerly made as Goldweights now made for jewelry. This beautifully crafted piece was made by the lost wax method of casting. The process entails first making a wax clone of the desired object. Then a combination of ash and clay is applied around the wax clone to make a receptacle for the molten metal once the wax clone impression is removed. Then the clay is heated which drains the wax out leaving a cavity (or mold) for the molten bronze. Finally the molten bronze is poured into the cavity to form a perfect impression of the vanished clone. After the molten bronze has cooled, the mold is broken, and the newly created bronze piece is cleaned with citrus juice.
