Ancient traditions of Ashanti warfare inspire this bright and colorful composition by Asayaw Osahene Asante. "In olden days when the Ashanti people were at war, the warriors prepared by bathing in a concoction made up of herbs and water," explains the Ghanaian artist. "The chief priest of the village was in charge of preparing the bath. Afterwards, the warriors were presented in front of the ancient mad masks as a form of tribute. Ashanti warriors believe that when they go to war, it is to return victorious. To them, there is no surrender until death."
