VINTAGE BOTTLE with CORK

ATWOOD'S JAUNDICE BITTERS

Approx 6" tall x 2 1/4" diameter

This bottle is pretty with a nice twelve-sided panel shape and bluish tinge. It has a cork, but it is unknown if it is original. It is in good condition with no chips or cracks but is cloudy and could use a good cleaning. This bottle dates approx betw 1880-1900

Dr. Moses Atwood first invented and manufactured these bitters around 1843 in Georgetown, Mass. Most bottles were blown and embossed using a mold in one pint bottles where the lip was hand applied and tooled. Some were marketed in six-packs to pharmacies throughout New England with a yellow label stating Atwood's Vegetable Jaundice Bitters, the ailments it cured and how to use it. In 1883, the Manhattan Medicine Co. in New York started producing the bitters under Atwood's name, as did other manufacturers, leading to a misrepresentation of trademark lawsuit. Around that time, nearly 12,000 bottles were sold annually.
