AR (Silver) Denarius (20 mm, 3.67 g).

Lugdunum (Lyon) mint. Struck 2 BC -14 AD

Obverse: CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE, laureate head of Augustus right.

Reverse: C L CAESARES AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT, Gaius and Lucius Caesars standing facing, shields and spears between them; simpulum and lituus above.

Ref. RIC I 207; RSC 43. Toned VF, small test mark rev. Choice style portrait.

Gaius and Lucius Caesars, the sons of Marcus Agrippa and Augustus' daughter, Julia, became imperial heirs in 5 BC and 2 BC respectively. Their deaths in 4 AD and 2 AD respectively, were attributed by gossip to Augustus' wife Livia in a long-standing plan to place Tiberius as the next in line.
