Despite the fact that the first male settlers followed the example of the Aboriginals and swam naked in the cooling waters of Botany Bay, the sweltering females had to suffer. Not even an ankle could be shown in those days, if a lady were well-bred - even children only paddled their feet. Women were eventually allowed to bathe under the cover of a horse drawn bathing machine. Later, they were allowed to wear voluminous garments, plus hat, while keeping well away from the men.
Neck to knee bathing garments were a welcome relaxation of the laws, but segregation of the sexes remained, even in public pools. As fashions changed, so did many other aspects of life at the seaside. No longer was it correct to retain the pale English complexion - a golden tan was a necessity, and still is, although people have become much more conscious of skin cancer.
Sunny Memories encapsulates all their stories and retraces our path to the sea. It is the first published history of Australians at the Seaside.
