AUTH Jennings Bros. Metalware Terrier/Dog-1931-Must See

Purchased from a Connecticut antique dealer, this handsome metalware dog figure bears the backstamp of the famed Jennings Bros. foundry.

The Jennings Brothers began their metalwork business in Bridgeport, CT in 1891 and remained open until the early 1950s. During that period, they produced some of the most finely crafted art metal pieces ever made in a product line that ranged from bookends to animal figurines. The company relied on the handiwork of expert artists, sculptors and metal craftsmen.

The business peaked in the 1920s-1930s and, not coincidentally, this dog is marked with the distinctive "JB" mark and the number 31 which I assume indicates it was made in 1931. (If I'm in error, I assume some more knowledgeable ebayer will weigh in with a correction.)

In any case, it's clear this dog has some age as indicated by the overall rich patination. Originally, I thought this dog was silverplate but, after doing some research about the Jennings Bros., it was probably made of cast white metal or spelter.

After examining this dog, I can appreciate why the complexity of the Jennings Bros. designs is highly prized.

This Jennings Bros. dog measures 3.75 inches at its widest span and stands 4" at its highest point (the dog's right ear.)

It is also quite heavy -- weighing in at over a pound on my digital scale.
