ANTIQUE MODEL 1841 US CIVIL WAR NAVAL CUTLASS MADE BY AMES AUTHENTIC BOSTON ESTATE SWORD FEATURING ORIGINAL BRASS HANDLE WITH DOUBLE-SIDED ENGRAVED AMERICAN EAGLE ON THE TIP GUARANTEED TO BE AUTHENTIC ANTIQUE AND NOT A REPRODUCTION Absolutely stunning in design and condition - Amazing addition to your antique Civil War Naval Cutlass/Sword collection. I am listing this item for my next-door neighbor. It was given to him by his 92 year old father who has recently decided to sell his estate in Boston, Massachusetts. His father remembers playing with the sword as a child in the 1920's and can explain the small nick to the blade as he was playing Cowboys and Indians with several neighborhood children which resulted in the small nick to the blade and the resulting punishment from his father for playing with a family heirloom. This Model 1841 US Naval Cutlass is dated on the blade near the handle with an etched marking which reads 1846 US. I have researched the sword from several experts and they have verified its authenticity and age. The blade has quite a bit of age-rusting as it has been stored in the family's attic for several years. I will leave it to the buyer to clean the blade, as I fear damaging this wonderful antique. I have added several pictures of the blade and handle in my picture gallery below which shows the sword and initials and engravings close-up and in detail. Design: The handle features a scale or feather motif along its length with 3 buttons on each side. The elaborately engraved American Eagle design is on both sides of the handle's tip. The blade also has two different sets of initials on the scroll work design near the bottom edge of the blade. The first set of initials are J.L. and the other initials are R.C. This Naval Cutlass is quite heavy and will require extra padding during shipping which will raise the cost of shipping, so please check out the shipping costs before placing your bid. Measurements: 27" in length from blade tip to handle tip. The blade measures 1 1/2" in width at its widest point and the brass handle measures 7" in length and 4" in width including the grip. My online research has shown that the prices of these blades run the gamet from $1,000 - $5,000 depending on the condition and venue sold. Here is a bit of research that a very kind expert has led me to find: Adopted in late 1841, this model cutlass was made by the Ames Mfg. Co. until 1846. In all a total of 6,600 cutlasses were produced. These saw service through the Mexican and Civil Wars. It has a straight double edged blade with a median ridge. The grip and pommel are cast brass. The guard consists of a broad strip of brass which gradually expands from the pommel to form a wide flat counter guard. The outside edges are thickened for increase strength and the quillon terminates above the blade in a disc. This Model 1841 Federal Eagle US Cutlass has a "D" guard and the hilt is solid brass, except for the guard. The Federal Eagle is cast into the pommel and "scales" or "feathers" cast into the grip. These were carried by the Federal Navy throughout the Mexican War and used by the North (and Variants of the South) during the Civil War. Most, if not all, were made by Ames. Please visit my picture gallery below for different angles and stunning condition.
