Aymara Native American Indian Stone Protective Fetish, Amulet
This is a wonderful authentic stone fetish, also called an uta illa, from the Aymara culture of Bolivia. The protective amulet was carved from huamanga, an alabaster stone readily found in the Andes, and the representation of the animals and ground (mesa) is considered a "spirit seat" and is used to protect the animals and the family's land. The carved amulet has deposits of untu, or spiritual fat from the male llama's chest, which is ceremonially rubbed into amulets and ritual objects, as well as participant's faces and hands. There is also evidence on the bottom of an additional pink/red pigment which is applied ceremonially for protection. The illa is beautifully stylized and has a great patina and wear from the years - a wonderful treasure!
