Aboriginal Pearl Shell Pubic cover LONKA LONKA late 1950s
A fine and large of antique "Lonka Lonka" (or "Riji Jakoli"). It is decorated with incised interlocking key designs and rubbed with red ochre pigment to the face of the pearl shell. These were worn as a pubic covers by the men. They acquired sacred status and were highly valued articles of gift exchange with the inland Aboriginal people where they were often used in rainmaking ceremonies. This pendant retains some human hair from the original string belt which were attached through the pierced hole in the top. Note minor chipping at the base
This Lonka Lonka was collected by Sandy and Christine Darriga (know by local aborigines as "Mr & Mrs Mechanic" - Sandy was the senior mechanic) who were welfare officers at Areyonga Mission in the very early 60s. The Lonka Lonka was gifted to Sandy by Pintubi tribal elder "Nipper" (who appeared on an Australian postage stamp in 1950) for "saving" the life of his grandson. It is old and used and would late from sometime in the late 50s to collection in the very early 60s
