| Black Medallion is a transitional piece I created between working on the Nevada Impression Series and the early Sun Series.When working on this piece in January & February of 1998, my thoughts were introspective, which is a common theme at the beginning of a new year. I primarily work from an intuitive or improvisational approach, and it occurred to me that the embroidered central medallion was incorporated subconsciously and represented my New Years introspective thoughts. | Even though I used some of the same fabrics, and a similar color palette, there is a marked difference between the series of work I created before and after Black Medallion. The Nevada Impression Series is primitive. The edges of the fabrics were unfinished, and created using a raw edge appliqué technique. In contrast Black Medallion and the early pieces of Sun Series are elegant and more refined with finished edges. |

For example, Black Medallion was created with luxurious fabrics: copper colored satin and black lace with gold embroidery. The composition is Zen-like, minimal, and reminiscent of an Asian shoji screen or an abstract torii gate. | | |

The improvisational collage style of composing allows me the freedom to explore and discover unexpected evolutions of the content and meaning behind the metaphorical imagery.
While the metaphoric images have specific meaning to me, they are also enigmatic in that the viewer can bring their own personal experience to their interpretation.
A full-time studio artist, instructor and lecturer since 1994, Linda’s art has been exhibited and collected internationally.
