Giving Works Item
About this nonprofit:
The goal and purpose of the Sportsmans Alliance for Alaska is to engage hunters and anglers, hunting and fishing conservation organizations, professional guides and outfitters, and companies in the hunting and angling product industries in campaigns to ensure that the wealth of hunting and angling opportunities on public lands in Alaska are maintained and improved for this and future generations.

Welcome to the Bristol Bay Conservation Campaign Fundraising Auction!

Thank you for visiting the online auction to benefit the campaign to protect one of the world’s greatest fishing and hunting destinations – Alaska’s famed Bristol Bay. This region is home to the world’s largest runs of wild Pacific salmon as well as the best trophy rainbow trout fishing on the planet. Anglers come to pursue those fish as well as Dolly Varden, arctic char, arctic grayling, lake trout, and pike. Hunters visit southwest Alaska to hunt caribou, moose, and bear. This area is truly a sportsman’s paradise, but unfortunately it’s in great peril. Multinational mining corporations are proposing to turn this remote, fish and game-rich area into a massive mining district complete with huge open pits, toxic tailings lakes, and some of the largest dams in the world.

Your support via this auction or direct donations will help wage the battle necessary to fight for Bristol Bay. You may find a full listing of auction items as well as a schedule for the auction at the Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska Web site. At that site, you may also learn more about Bristol Bay and the threat facing it, sign a petition to Alaska’s Governor and federal agencies asking that the area remain a haven for sporting pursuits, and make a direct donation to the campaign.

This auction would not be possible without the generosity and support of so many companies in the sporting products industry. You will find fishing rods, reels, waders, other gear, artwork, and trips to some fantastic destinations in Alaska as well as other parts of the globe. The Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska and the campaign to protect Bristol Bay would like to extend a very sincere thank you to all of the donors who contributed to this fundraising effort.

Without further delay, please check out the details for this listing, below. The minimum price has been set at under 75% of retail value, but the hope is that every item or trip will sell for retail value or higher. We are definitely “David” to the mining corporation’s “Goliath” in this fight. Nothing worth saving or no fight worth winning ever comes easy. Much work will be needed to prevail in this fight and your support is critical. Here’s your opportunity to help save one of the greatest sporting destinations in the world. Bid early and often.

Thank you for your support.

Scott Hed – Director
Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska

"Abstract Brookie - Royal Coachman" limited edition giclee print

Here’s a beautiful limited edition print (number 4/500) by artist Derek DeYoung of Canvasfish.com.  This brook trout print is part of the “Abstract Trout Face” series.

The print size is 13" x 19".

Derek’s work is dedicated to the avid fly fisherman and has been recently featured in Wild on the Fly, Black’s Fly Fishing Buyer’s Directory, Fly Rod & Reel, and more.

Derek is one of those artists that was born painting. By age six, he was declaring to his schoolmates and family that he would one day be a famous artist. Few people who knew him well ever doubted this prediction. His parents say he was a stubborn little kid, but that very stubbornness is what now gives him the strength to persevere the hardships that accompany the life of an artist.

"I've committed my life to being an artist, and I wouldn't have it any other way. To be an artist is more then just painting a scene on canvas. An artist sees the world differently then most people. I am always seeking out the beauty in life and in the world, searching for that magical experience or vision that will inspire me to paint at a higher level. The act of pursuing trout and steelhead with a fly rod contains so many of these magical moments. For me the truly inspirational vision, both as an artist and as an angler, comes once I've landed a particularly beautiful fish. I hold it up, tilting the fish back and forth in the sunlight, allowing all the subtle colors and patterns to come alive."

Derek is often asked why he paints fish. "I find fish so interesting and they are truly a challenge to capture on canvas. When I paint a fish, I try to capture all the intricacies they possess, their scales, patterns, dimension and texture."

DeYoung's work has veered off from the traditional fish illustration style. His paintings are very contemporary, placing more importance on using a unique style and palette rather than painting a fish to look photo realistic.

Now days it's less important to Derek to become that "Famous Artist" he told everyone he would become. He's just happy to have built his life around his two loves, painting and fly fishing.

Retail value of this item is $120
