Acadia, or l’Acadie in French, is the name given to the former French colony in northeastern North America. Today the name refers to the regions of Atlantic Canada with French roots.

In the Great Deportation (Grand Dérangement) of 1755, a large percentage of Acadians were driven out of Acadia by the British. The Acadians were transported to various American colonies and many later resettled in French Louisiana, where they became known as Cajuns. Others later returned to Maritime Canada.

The 1847 epic poem "Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is a romanticized account of the 1755 Deportation and its aftermath. The poem became an American classic, and also contributed to a rebirth of Acadian identity in both Louisiana and Maritime Canada.

The Acadian flag was designed in 1883 by Father Marcel-François Richard. The first flag was sewn by Miss Marie Babineau and is conserved at the Musée Acadien de l'Université de Moncton, in Moncton, New Brunswick.

The Acadian flag was adopted at the second convention nationales acadiennes (Acadian National Convention) held on August 15, 1884 in Miscouche, Prince Edward Island.
