The Amazon is the source of about 20% of the Earth's oxygen. It is home to more than half of the Earth's estimated 10 million species of plants and animals. Many thousands of plants with medicinal properties remain "undiscovered" by western medicine in the heart of the Amazon Forest. Açaí, now considered a super-food, has long been used traditionally by Amazon people.

The Legend of Açaí

"There existed a populated village at the edges of the Pará river that was growing so large, so fast, that their food began to become scarce. The leader of the tribe called Itaki, took drastic measures, and decreed that any newborn children would be sacrificed. At the time, his own daughter, Iaçá, was pregnant. During the pregnancy, Iaçá prayed to Tupá (God), that he would show her father a food that could save the tribe. She prayed day and night, but nothing happened. Finally, Iaçá's precious baby girl was born. Unfortunately, this baby was sacrificed as all others had been. Iaçá was devastated. She cried day and night, did not eat, and stayed shut away in her hut for many days. One night, Iaçá thought she heard the crying of her daughter in the forest, so she slipped into the forest lead by the sound until she came to a slender palm tree, where her daughter lay beneath. But, when she tried to embraced her infant, the image disappeared. The following day, tribe members found Iaçá dead, embracing the palm tree with a smile on her lips. Her open eyes were focused upon the many bunches of dark purple fruits at the top of the palm.

Iaçá's father ordered that the fruit be brought down, and mashed. They obtained a reddish juice, that soon became a main staple for the tribe, bringing them much energy and renewed life.

Itaki called the fruit Açaí (Iaçá inverted) in memory of Iaçá, and her daughter. He removed the ban on having children, and the tribe soon began to prosper. Today, that population of people is known as Belém, in the state of Pará, Brazil, from where much of the world's açaí comes."

The History of Açaí  

Growing on rainforest palms, the Brazilian Açaí (Ah-Sigh-Ee) berry is the super-model of fruit. The fruits of the rainforest have been enjoyed by native Indians for centuries. 

Brazilian natives have long treasured açaí berries for their ability to provide a sense of strength, energy and a high nutritional content. The dark purple color of the fruit is due to the polyphenolic compounds present. One of the main plant chemicals getting a lot of attention in açaí, is a compound called anthocyanin. Anthocyanins are a group of flavonoids widely distributed in plants and lending a red to purple color to fruits like grapes, blackberries, and raspberries. As a well known antioxidant, anthocyanin-rich foods and fruits have been marketed as cancer preventative and anti-aging products. Anthocyanins have also been studied as novel sources of natural food colorings and dyes.

Packed with vitamins B1, B2, B3, C, and E, açaí also provides minerals such as Calcium, Potassium, and Phosphorus, essential fatty acids, and a wealth of micronutrients.
