This is an exceptional piece. Originating in the western state of Rakhine. This style image first became popular in the late 18th century . While the Buddha is normally dressed in monastic robes, here he is fully robed in royal style with jewelry on his chest, around his waist and with large ear pieces. The headdress combines the notion of a crown together with the traditional pointed element at the top. The Buddha is standing on a lotus base and displaying the abhaya hand mudra representing fearlessness, protection, peace and the dispelling of fear. The royal Buddha has a distinctive aesthetic. The emphasis is not on serenity and inner piece rather in making a powerful and direct impression of fearlessness and confidence on the worshiper. There is a small missing piece at the edge of the left ear piece. Dimensions: 39” high X 11” wide at dase |
