About the Artist and Gold Nuggets

There is a saying that some folk get off the plane and are already Alaskans, while others stay here all their lives and aren't Alaskan at all.

Rita and Bill Bishop are true Alaskans. Since 1985, they've built a business handcrafting gold nugget and sterling silver jewelry. But like the pioneers, they make the most of Alaska's natural resources, hunting moose and fishing for salmon to feed their three children.

Buying nuggets is always an adventure. "You never know what a miner will bring in, and no two nuggets are ever the same. Each is a natural work of art."

Gold Nuggets are rarer than diamonds, even if only gem quality diamonds are considered. When both gem and industrial diamonds are considered, nuggets are more than twice as rare. On a volume-for-volume basis, nuggets are more than 10 times as rare as diamonds. Each gold nugget is unique and has its own character.

Less than 2 percent of the worlds gold remains in the form of nuggets. Gold nuggets are found worldwide - Australia, Africa, Russia, Bolivia and Canada. In the Continental United States nugget sources are primarily Alaska, California and Oregon. Additionally, nuggets are becoming rarer and harder to find. It is the individual prospector that is retrieving the gold nuggets and maintaining the tradition of past centuries. It is for this reason that the collector can still obtain gold nuggets in a variety of sizes, colors and textures. This is the unique distinction of nuggets and part of the mystery and romance of ownership.

Gold nuggets typically sell for a higher price than the gold spot price because they are rare and considered gem stones. Most of the bullion that is traded on the stock market is made from gold dust melted down to form coins; 98% of the worlds gold is in gold dust form and not gold nuggets.
