Very unique antique imperial size albumen c. 1875 clearly showing a U.S. Cavalry division of U.S. Soldiers posed next to their horses, the horses obviously trained to lay down as shields, several of the men shown with army revolvers drawn. Unusual animal also shown seated upon one horse...dog? Looks almost like a large wild cat or mountain lion, possibly and more then likely it was a dog distorted due to some movement captured during the taking of photograph. Still, looks comfortable seated on that horse :) Photo measures 8.75 x 5.25. Photo is very clear but does have tape and repair to one corner, edge wear (shown).  

The US cavalry was successful due to a tradition of good horsemanship and cavalrymen who cared for their mounts. The cavalry was known as "the hardest branch there is in the service." Most men regarded their enlistment in the cavalry, which drew $12 a month in pay, as a serious and purposeful act. During the westward expansion, cavalry posts were constructed and the cavalry was utilized to protect commerce and American settlers. While encounters and skirmishes with Native Americans are the most widely known activities of these soldiers, much time was spent policing relatively lawless territories; protecting immigration trails, rail and overland trading caravans, the movement of the mail and numerous small, rural isolated settlements.
