Although smaller than
the 4" of ceramic magnets described on Alex's web site, these 3" rare

Applications
of magnets:
If you have never met a
rare earth magnet before you probably cannot imagine the amount of magnetic strength
that is
packed into a small chunk of metal. Folks frequently ask me "what do you do with
magnets?" Having been immersed in rare earth magnet madness for over 6 years
now, I tend to feel like the answer to this question is very much like responding to:
"what do you do with Duct Tape?" How many of us have actually used duct
tape to tape heating or cooling ducts? Yet many of us would swear that duct tape is one of the
handiest inventions of modern times. The uses for such a versatile material are
endless... and similar is the case with super strong NIB magnets!
Below is an image of one of these long
BLOCK magnets being tested for magnetic holding strength.
Each BLOCK magnet can hold
up to 86lbs!
Basically, the test magnet
is stuck to the red painted iron at the bottom of the image and to the 4"
wide plate, which is attached to the dial scale. Below the image, (and out of
view), is a wench, which is used to pull down on the red painted iron. As the
wench is tightened
the magnetic bond pulls down on the dial scale. This plated BLOCK magnet tested
to 86 lbs! These test results represent a "best case scenario". Using
thinner metals, through gaps or in a vertical position the test results will be
less, sometimes much less than the 86lb results as tested above.
Other applications of
magnets:

Use caution
handling strong magnets. The neodymium magnets are brittle and can chip or break
if they are allowed to smack together. The smacking of magnets can be avoided by
sliding them apart as well as sliding them back together. For general
handling purposes a few wraps of clear thin tape will go far to protect these
BLOCK magnets from being chipped or broken. Handing mistakes with
this size of magnet can result in strong skin pinches that can result in loss of
blood, I wish it were not true but I too am a bleeding member of the Rare Earth
Magnet Club. You must not get them too close to tapes, wind-up watches, credit
cards, floppy discs, etc.; (6" is a safe distance). Neodymium magnets can cause
permanent damage to TVs and other electronic equipment; (18" is a safe
distance).
Anyone using a pacemaker
should consult
a physician.
