At auction is a new copy of Allen Ginsberg's 'Birdbrain' -- a poem of Allen's set to a driving New Wave rock setting in 1981 by local Denver band, The Gluons. Allen shouts out the lyrics while The Gluons pump up a hard driving guitar pop. The B Side is just The Gluons but it is a great cut full of snarky lyrics and snaky, phasered guitar lines.
The single was released in 1981 through Wax Trax Records in Denver. This features the limited edition color sleeve -- don't remember now how many there were of the color sleeve but it's pretty cool.
I saw Allen perform this song a couple of times with The Gluons and it was a gas! He loved to perform, he loved music and wanted, deep in his heart, to be a rock n roller -- and here, for 6:38, he was.
The Gluons broke up a little while after this single came out but Mike Chappelle, singer and guitarist, went on to form another band called Still Life -- who recorded a full length LP with Ginsberg -- it also is a corker. It came out in 1983 on Local Anesthetic Records (from Wax Trax Denver) and features a long 'Birdbrain Dub' that is completely different from the 7" version -- very trippy and spaced-out.
