DESCRIPTION: The fourth book in what has unintentionally become a series on Chinese antiques, "Allen's Authentication of Ancient Chinese Ceramics" covers, as the name suggests, authentication techniques for Chinese ceramics for the 5,000 year period from the neolithic period to the end of the Ming dynasty.
Accessing the author's 23 year experience in dealing and collecting Chinese ceramics, plus the stock sold by his New Zealand-based company, Allen's Antiques Ltd over the past six years, this book provides novice collectors and dealers with sensible advice which would otherwise take years to learn.
340 Pages
776 Colour Illustrations
The book starts with some practical advice on potential pitfalls which will be faced by anyone collecting these wares. This is followed by a useful chronology of China which sets out the most commonly encountered cultures and dynasties, together with a brief history of Chinese ceramics. Then follows a lengthy chapter on alleged scientific dating procedures, including thermoluminescence (T.L.) testing, followed by chapters on visible indicators of age, and simple tricks of the trade. There are additional chapters on marks and calligraphic inscriptions, and modern fakes and their detection, together with photographic examples of a number of these fakes. The book then focuses on five problem areas, with more practical advice on identifying both genuine ancient ceramics, and the bane of every collector's life; modern fakes made intentionally to deceive. Chapter 10 is a lengthy catalogue of representative examples of genuine ceramics sold by Allen's Antiques Ltd on the internet, most of these stating their selling prices.
So you have not only the only book devoted entirely to identifying both fake and genuine ancient Chinese ceramics, but a useful price guide as well.
