Aluminum Spring for Auger or Modern-Mechanical Art

Here is a unique and interesting piece of aluminum I saved from the scrap heap at a previous place of employment. It is in very good condition, slightly dirty and shows some wear. I thought it might make a good part for a wind chime or unique piece of artwork. It has been aged (oven baked heat treatment) and therefore is a spring that is a little difficult to compress all the way together by hand. We had many thoughts as to what it might be but the most recent and the most promising is that it was the auger dispenser for the early type of now common vending machines that sell candy bars, chips, and crackers. The one end is ground down to a rounded edge and the other to a rough chisel point. It is made of extruded aluminum bar about 0.475" wide x 0.125" (1/8") thick that was formed into a spring shape and aged. Spacing of the turns in the coil is about 1 5/8" and overall, it measures about 16 1/4" long x 4 1/4" O.D.; 11.4 oz actual weight. The other thing in the picture is there because we have no idea what it is. It is made of cast iron and is quite old. If you know, please tell us, we have asked many people and we are all very curious.
