Here is a rare and HIGHLY DESIRABLE American Majolica Charger, made cir. 1865-1870. It was produced by Arsenal Pottery in Trenton, New Jersey. On the front is the image of an Inn Keeper, seated beside a keg, with a tankard in hand. The rim is decorated with Scallopshells, and Fleur-de-Lis, against a back ground of intricately molded cross hatching. On either side of the charger are molded handles, with ornate scrolling. If you look the inner rim is Pie Crust mold. The reverse is mottled with a clearly marked center. This particular mark is associated with Arsenal Pottery, and is highly desired.
PROVENCE: ARSENAL was a very small pottery manufacturer. They produced high quality majolica items in the basic style of the large European manufacturers. At the time period these chargers were made, Arsenal had only 3 small Beehive kilns, and employed 17 people. Each item was basically HAND MADE. What made Arsenal, as well as the other small Trenton area majolica makers famous, was their glaze. Trenton majolica was easily spotted by the shiny, hard, glass like glaze. Unfortunately this was also their undoing. The glaze was so durable due to the very high content of both lead and tin. Pottery workers went on strike due to the dangerous working conditions caused by Lead Poisoning. Arsenal stopped manufacturing in 1870, and closed it's doors forever in 1871. The items that have survived are highly coveted by Majolica and Art Pottery collectors.
SIZE: 11" Diameter
CONDITION: VERY GOOD! There is slight discoloration on the lower, front of plate. This is drips of Brown from the rim. On the Reverse is one small, 3/8" crack. This is a FIRING CRACK. It was caused by uneven heat in the kiln during firing.
