American Brilliant Period Bowl Cut Glass Punchbowl

Item Description

We are delighted to offer this very fine quality Libbey cut glass punchbowl.  It is cut in the "Princess" design and this exact punchbowl is found on pg. 4 of the ACGA reprint of the 1896 Libbey catalog.  The blank is No. 211.  We are most grateful to a fellow ACGA member for the assistance in identifying this piece.

The "Princess" design is one that Libbey produced over a wide timespan according to the research included and found in the book Cut and Engraved Glass by Dorothy Daniel.  We have found Ms. Daniel's book which is one of the earliest thorough sources of research on Amercian Brilliant Period cut glass to be a gem of a research material.

In her book, Ms. Daniel identifes "Princess" as one of  the last designs patterns of W.C. Anderson.  She describes "Princess" as follows: "The distinguishing characteristics of the Princess pattern are the alternating English and American strawberry-diamond points between the fan scallops with a bow-knot cut through the crosshatching on the points.  The hob-star, then so popular in all cut glass patterns, particularly with Libbey, is only used as a center motif in this pattern.

This impressive punchbowl measures 12-inches in diameter and 6-inches tall.  The blank is colorless and excellent in quality, clarity and brillance.  The overall condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or noted repairs although there are some imperfections with a few of the fan scallops that are minor but mentioned for accuracy.
