American Pop is the animated story of a very talented and troubled family, starting at the turn of the century in Russia, moving through eight decades of music in the United States, and four generations of young men and their music. Though all the characters are fictitious, most are composites of famous musicians, and the songs they create are all popular songs already written. The film explores the evolution of American music and history in the Twentieth Century through the story of this musical family.

Written by Ronni Kern, American Pop features music by Bob Dylan, Ray Evans, George Gershwin, Herbie Hancock, Jimi Hendrix, Cole Porter, and Bob Seger. Music: arranged by Lee Holdridge. Animators: Lillian Evans, Carl Bell, Craig Armstrong, Steve Gordon, Brenda Banks,Chrystal Russell. Layout and design: Louise Zingarelli, John Sparey, Johnnie Vita, Marcia Adams, Barry Jackson. Signed DVDs are available through the Bakshi website.

An animation cel is a piece of acetate, usually 10 1/2 x 12 1/2". Each cel has been hand inked, copying the line of the animation drawing, by an "inker".  Then it has been hand painted  by an "opaquer" with colors selected especially for each scene in the film. When combined with the hand painted background, it becomes one frame of the film. Each cel is numbered by scene, and numbered by its place in the scene. It also has the letter of the seqence from which it comes. A sequence is made up of scenes. Each animation cel has its own individual letter and numbers. There are no duplicates.
