Harry Belafonte spent most of the '90s in semi-retirement, appearing only on the occasional television show, until the 1997 PBS special to which this album is the soundtrack. Largely new material, except for the traditional encore of "Matilda," "Jamaica Farewell," and "The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)," AN EVENING WITH HARRY BELAFONTE AND FRIENDS focuses on the world music aspects of Belafonte's music, with two songs featuring the African pop singer Richard Bona.
Belafonte's vocals, while in a lower register than in his late '50s heyday, are as supple and elastic as ever, and the arrangements, though they still Americanize a fair amount, are more traditional than on his pure-pop early albums. This isn't Belafonte's best work, but it's still delightful.
