An agrarian people occupying areas in northeastern Liberia and western Cote d'Ivoire. The Dan are known for their accomplished music and dancing as well as for the artistry and variety of their masks. Dan masks are usually used by male associations for rituals, education, social control and entertainment. Masks were thought to embody the most powerful of spirit forces called gle. Each gle has its own character which brought control and order to village life. This beautifully carved old Dan mask measures 14" in height.
