A stunning, elegant, ancient Greek Athenian Stemmed Kylix, dating to approximately 450 B.C.
The kylix is of typical Attic form, with disc base, short ridged stem and wide flaring body. Two loop handles lie bilaterally. The kylix is one of the most elegant ancient Greek ceramic shapes, used for drinking wine as it could be held comfortably in one hand. This is a particularly nice example. The piece is decorated with a glossy black glaze outlining reserved bands. The exterior is painted with vertical black and Burgundy lines, bordered inferiorly by a reserved ring of black and white dots. The inner tondo is decorated with concentric circles.
The Kylix was the Ancient Greek equivalent of the drinking cup and was used in the well known game kottabos, which involved the drunken guests at a symposia flinging the remains of their wine at a specified target, whilst holding the kylix with the index finger through a loop handle. If the thrower hit the target whilst uttering the name of his desired partner, he would be a successful lover.
