An attractive, fascinating ancient Greek pottery Kyathos (or wine dipper), dating to approximately 500 B.C.
The Kyathos is of typical form, with wide bowl-like body, flat base and elaborate curved handle, stylized into a primitive "plank figure" at the front. The piece is attractively decorated throughout with orange and black pigments, on a cream slip (undercoat). Of particular interest is the heavily stylized anthropomorphic "plank" figure represented on the handle. The idol is shown with long red horns, small square eyes and a slit mouth. The back of the handle curves down and possibly represents a cape or cloak of the demonic figure.
A circular perforation adorns the handle superiorly and may have been used to suspend the piece from a wall.
This piece dates to the Daunian II period (approximately 550-400 B.C.) and is painted in so called "subgeometric" style. Daunia was a historical region in southern Italy that produced some of the most imaginative pottery of the ancient world. Unlike the Apulian Greeks, the Daunian potters were more influenced by native Italic ceramic traditions, although there are undoubted contemporary Greek influences. This is a particularly intriguing example displaying rare figural art.
