Isle of Lewis Chessmen Replica a Classsic Chess set made by Auldaney founder of the famous International chess by mail club Chessology founded in 1974. The chessmen are cast from natural rock, NOT resin in a method invented by Auldaney called PetraStone King 31/2 inches high, Queen 31/8 inch high, Knight 3 1/4 high, pawns 3, 1 14/16, 1 3/4 inches high, Bishop 3 1/8 inches. Each piece is similar but not a mirror image of the opponent's pieces. This replica reproduces a Classic ancient 12th century chess set, discovered in a cave created by a building buried under sand on the west coast of Isle of Lewis, Scotland in 1831. Probably made of Scandinavian Brown/White Pieces. The peasant who found them thought they were real Elves and Gnomes and ran away. His wife got him to go back, and he brought them home. He sold them to a local collector who recognized them as chessmen. There were 78 pieces from eight different sets. The British Museum now has 67 of them, the rest are in the National Museum in Edinburgh. They are considered the most outstanding collection of ancient chessmen in existence. For hundreds of years all professional chess Masters have these famous chessmen. (NOTE: My computer crashed and I had to continue running my eBay business from a library computer for one hour a day. Then my vehicle broke down and was unable to get to the library and my eBay business suffered. I have had to hire people to continue my gardening route, and desperately need help or I will loose everything and become homeless. I was given a new computer and I am home more often, and will be able to keep up with my eBay orders now. Please help. Thank you.) |
