Antique bronze Thai Buddha in style of Dvaravati. The figure is seated on a double lotus base with hands held out at the waist in the “teaching Buddha” position. The hair shows hand workmanship rather than being just cast as part of the bronze figure and is tightly curled around his head. The Buddha also features elongated earlobes and downcast eyes, typical of early castings. The robe is draped over the Buddha’s left shoulder, and his feet are shown emerging beneath the bottom of the robe. This Buddha has some interesting provenance. We acquired it during the 1990’s along with a large collection of early bronze and wood Buddha images and Asian antiques brought back from Southeast Asia during the 1960’s by a former pilot for Air America. This and two other bronzes were among our favorites, and have been in our personal collection until now. (Photos of the collection can be provided upon request.)
